An Overflowing Nappy Bin, My Latest Car Essential & The One Trick That’s Gotten our Baby Sleeping Through the Night

As you can probably deduce from the title of this post, my head is buzzing with random titbits I want to share with you all. The problem, however is that – WOAH September is busy not least with my middle one starting school – and so I’m struggling to find the time to articulate them. (see also overflowing nappy bin above). So I thought I’d just outpour two small things on my mind right now, and see how that goes.

I’ve written before about Abe’s fairly erratic sleeping patterns and how I’ve been muddling through them with a dose of acceptance and random leg shaving. I’m sure by the time our other two were one years old they were more or less sleeping through the night but here we are, with a wonderful thirteen month old babe who still wakes multiple times through the night. Or at least – who was. I think. Maybe. Ah. I’m. nervous. just. writing. this. Porridge, my friends, porridge! I’ve been feeding Abe warm porridge with some mashed banana, grated apple and anything else I find vaguely lurking at the bottom of our fridge for the past 6 nights through the bars of his cot and HE SLEEPS THROUGH! (I, of course, am still not really as my body is so attuned to waking through the night that I struggle to switch off but that’s a minor detail, because anyway – lying in silence in bed, half asleep, half awake, is actually pretty enjoyable.) I’ll of course jinx this writing this and expect tonight that he’ll be up partying again but I’ll keep you posted! In the meantime, I’ll be stocking up on oats.

On arriving at my folk’s house the other day and with two out of three kids conked out, it dawned on me that it could be an opportune moment for a quick nap. There’s nothing I love more than rolling up the windows, switching my phone to silent, stretching myself across the front two seats whilst silently cursing the clunky seat belts and shutting my eyes. This time though, whilst my eldest ran into the back garden, I realised there was one item that could potentially transform this mildly awkward experience: a pillow. I messaged my mum who promptly delivered two small pillows, and let me tell you – those 4 minutes, horizontal and sunken into the softness, whilst my two babes snoozed in the back were magic. There’s been a pillow stored in our boot ever since.

———-

That’s it from me, for now. How are you doing? What’s new in your world?

Hello there fellow nightwalkers! I honestly think a lot of this is down to sheer luck. My oldest didn’t sleep all night until he was at least 5. My boys would never ever fall asleep on their own like yours Emma! I was seriously jealous when I watched a video a while back 😱 Total monkeys I have here. If I lie in bed with them, lights out, they will crawl around for a lot longer then I would like to be awake myself.
We now all co-sleep and I breastfeed my 2 1/2 year old if he wakes up. Things have been ALOT easier since!
Porridge is interesting 🤔 supposed to be energising in TCM but whatever helps, do it! Daytime sleep is gold I feel you ❤️
The mantra is: everything is a phase, all things pass in time, it’s not forever, Ohm…..!!!

I read your post and thought you said you breastfed your 21 year old. Almost spat my tea out!

Good luck with the sleep. Mine are the same and i also breastfeed them to sleep/ when they wake up!

My kids have never slept through until about 2 or after. My third is 11 months and is at an all time low with sleep. Ya know, thinking the lack of sleep is going to be the end of me. But I love the idea of snoozing in the car. Will definitely think about trying the oats out before bed tonight with the baby. 🤞✌️

Aghhhhhhh…….I’m on 22 months with a baby that still does not sleep through the night. My longest stint (in a single hit) is 3 hours. And then 2, then 1….you get the idea. Amazing you’ve found a way through the tunnel of horrendous sleep deprivation. I think I’ll be trying out the porridge trick.
