10 Things I’m Currently Digging

From books to body oil to bralessness, here’s a few things I’m digging these days, that are lighting me up and bringing me joy during this sort of limbo lockdown we currently find ourselves in.

1.Woman of Color
Part memoir, part lifestyle guide, I am hooked to this collection of essays, archival photos and interviews experienced and collated by the incredible LaTonya Yvette. She shares her own experiences as a black woman living in Brooklyn as well as those of other women of colour and covers life’s trials from motherhood, racism, love, death. Grab your copy here.

2. This toothpaste
Dark pink in colour, smooth and foam free, in this toothpaste Weleda use a base of calcium carbonate combined with an extract of Peru Ratanhia root, calming myrrh and peppermint and spearmint essential oils. And BOOM, I love it. Oh and I massively rate how the Weleda site allows you to hover over an ingredient to provide more details about what it actually is/does.

3. And this toothbrush
I’ve got be honest, I’m starting to get frustrated by bamboo toothbrushes; how quickly they break, how pricey they can be, and are they really working? This one might just keep me in the game though. So far, I’m especially loving the curved head.

4.Growing wildflowers in shady spots
Our hammock hangs in this little corner of our garden and I keep imagining lying back in it, surrounded by wild flowers. Only problem is that it’s kinda shady. After a bit of Ecosia-ing, I stumbled across this special mix of wildflowers for growing in little light, similar to those you’d find growing naturally beneath trees or in a woodland setting. It contains annuals, perennials and grass, the bees are already buzzing and I’m so excited to see what other beauties will pop up!

5. This body oil
I’ve raved about this product before but it’s during the Summer that I love it most. Made with natural, cold-pressed coconut oil into which a Tuberose flower has been immersed, the incredible scent of the flower is absorbed naturally into the oil using a traditional African process of enfleurage. If I could, I’d use it all over my body, in the bath, on my hair but I want to savour it. Obsessed!

6.The Death of the Bra
Lockdown has changed how we present ourselves to the world and for many of us, a chance to do away with uncomfortable underwear. And many have no intention of returning to underwires and constriction; others worry about the judgement. What’s your take on it?

7.I May Destroy You
Themes of sexual assault, consent and millennial life form the nexus of the show and with its abrupt tonal shifts from absurd and funny to tragic and painful in one half hour episode, this show is dizzying and mesmerising and “is calling for introspection”, explains its writern star and in part director Michaela Coel, in this Vulture interview. We’re half way through and hooked – it might just be the most powerful thing you’ve watched in a long time.

8.Sophie Says I Can, I Will
This is a new children’s book written to inspire young girls and boys about the direction their lives might take. When little Sophie starts pondering her future she is too excited to sleep, and leaps out of bed to lay out her plans to her parents. The uplifting story tackles stereotypes head on by showcasing diverse female roles, and throughout the story Sophie repeats the mantra ‘I Can, I Will’ which I now use with the boys a lot. The extra amazing part? The author, Esther Marshall, is donating all proceeds from the book to sTandTall, a platform to help those suffering from abuse and bullying.

{Disclosure: The author provided us with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review}

9.Queen and Slim
We watched this a few weeks back and I’m yearning to watch it again. Full of suspense and beauty, covering visions of identity, race and injustice, and starring the spectacular Daniel Kaluuya and little known but unforgettable Jodie Turner-Smith (this is her first starring feature-film role). I don’t want to give any spoilers but please, watch this movie.

10.These earrings
Because are they not just the funkiest thing, ever? And wait til you see the rest of Mutsa’s collection.

What are you into and up to these days?

I found something new on this website, some of my opinions agree with that, I just want to ask for one brief opinion or tips on the article or a few sentences above and I’m sure you are more skilled in making concise conclusions and concise for that.. very informative. I’m no good at brushing manually so have given up in favor of my old electric brush with little replaceable heads. Have given up shower gel and handwash and use bar soap now so hope that compensates a bit! It’s a balancing act. (Plus turns out soap is WAY gentler on hands than whatever they put in the pumps!) Oh and I make deodorant from your recipe, it’s great.
I can’t watch violent or sad TV because I just absorb the emotions and it affects my mental health so I’ve learnt to keep it light and slow paced like Poirot/Miss Marple/Phryne Fisher on the rare occasions I get a chance to sit and watch something! I prefer reading. I’m loving painting my toenails in a little weekly act of lock down self care, eating oranges, organising cupboards and getting more sleep than usual. I think you might be able to swing a gig as an earring model Emma – that jawline is perfection! 🙂 x
